The ‘pub’ with which Ireland has become synonymous was born out of the early Irish tradition of going 'ag bothantiocht' - where people invited neighbours into their home for an evening of music and dance. It is interesting, that as a consequence of the recession in Ireland, the ‘house gig’ made a welcome return and people experienced an enriched engagement with art, artists and performers in this intimate, less public space. Moving to London a few years ago, I missed the coziness of these informal gatherings especially in the cold winter months when we are less inclined to be sociable and hence top floor flat was born!
